If you happen to be in the area and looking for a short level hike Wavecrest Open Space might be worth checking out. It’s an important site for wintering raptors, so you might get lucky and see them hunting in the property’s broad fields. A 1.5-mile section of the California Coastal Trail runs through this preserve (not accessible), and other unmarked trails traverse the open fields.

Trails and Pathways

Time to Complete:
20 minutes
Trailhead Location:
Foot of Wavecrest Rd.
Trail Length:
Less than .5 mile
Typical Width:
4 ft. & above
Typical Grade:
Level
Typical Terrain:
Firm
Trail Overview: At the trailhead are several trail options; all are compacted dirt with some pathches of grass. Having never been here before I followed the trail to the right because it was lined with mustard that reached above my head. After just a few hundred yards I turned back because the terrain became too rough with ruts plus it wasn’t heading towards the ocean.

Back at the trailhead I then followed the trail that headed south in a westerly direction. A few Cypress trees dot the coastal scrub landscape and the ocean can be seen and heard off in the distance. Birdsong filled the air on my early spring hike. At the first junction I veered right on the wide grass and dirt trail but turned back after a few hundred feet. On the return there was lovely views of the hills.

More Info: Patches of grass grow on the trail.

Accessibility Features

The facilities listed below meet all of our access criteria unless otherwise noted.
Accessible Parking:
Partial designated accessible parking, hard, level or slope no greater than 2%;

There are no marked accessible parking spaces in this large undeveloped dirt and gravel lot but there is plenty of room to create your own space if there is no game being played on the adjoining ball field.

Accessible Restroom:
Partially Accessible – There is a restroom at the parking lot but it is only open when there is a ball game. It was closed on my visit so I did not check it out.
