Trail Overview: This pleasant, urban, heavily trafficked one-mile trail is lined with mature oaks, redwoods, and Eucalyptus trees that give you the sense that you’re in nature. It’s built on the historic rail bed of the Sacramento Northern Railway and a few interpretive panels talk about its history. Traffic noise from nearby roads is constant but the lively birdsong instead becomes the focus. Except for the steep inclines (greater than 1:12, an average ramp) to reach the trailhead and one up to the bridge crossing, it's an easy, mostly level stroll. Benches are scattered throughout. The trail is well cared for by a local resident’s group and towards the end of the trail is an area planted with natives.

Accessibility Features

The facilities listed below meet all of our access criteria unless otherwise noted.
Accessible Parking:
Yes – designated accessible parking, van accessible, firm, level or slope no greater than 2%;

The easiest and most level parking is at the public fee lot at the foot of La Salle Ave. To access the trail, take the asphalt behind the parking lot and about halfway down go through the tunnel and then turn left uphill to reach the trail. If you don’t turn into the tunnel but instead continue on the path towards Medau Place where there is another trailhead, there is no curb cut to get you across Medau Pl. to the trailhead. Unless you can pop a wheelie, you would have to go down the steep hill on Medau Pl. and back up the other side to reach the trailhead.

Alternatively, street parking on either La Salle or Medau Place is on a steep hill and one blue zone is on the NE corner of Mountain Blvd and Medau Pl. but you’ll have to climb a steep hill up Medau Pl. to reach the trailhead.
