If you are seeking tranquility and want a respite from your electronic devices then the historic cabins at Pt. Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park is a great choice for an escape. The park sits on a headland that juts dramatically into the ocean; pounding waves have cut channels to the north and south, almost rendering it an island. Many of the light station's original buildings (light tower, three keeper's residences, coal buildings, carpentry shop, smithy, and oil house) still stand today amongst the 270- acres of coastal bluffs and prairie that offer some access.

Four units are available for rent but only East (#42) and West (#43) Cottages are wheelchair accessible; the two other larger units have only ramp access but if you come with a group that rented multiple units it could serve as a good gathering place. The cottages were previously used as out buildings and have been converted into quaint cottages with a 30’s feel. Cabin #43 allows pets. As there is no onsite property manager you’ll need to check in and pick up the key at Mendocino Coast Rentals, at 45084 Little Lake Street in downtown Mendocino located about 3 miles from the cottage.

Indoor Accessibility

Unit Reviewed:
East Cottage #42

Each cottage is equipped with a queen bed, 2 chairs, TV/DVD player, coffee maker, microwave, and small refrigerator. The wood vaulted ceilings and period furniture helps to create a warm, cozy ambiance in addition to the radient heated floor which helps to temper the damp evenings. Lighting fixtures and the pull chain for the toilet flusher are in keeping with the historic feel, but that also means that some access has been compromised. There’s no cell reception or cable TV, but you can borrow a DVD from the rental office.

In the morning make yourself a hot drink (bring your own coffee and tea) and sit outside to enjoy the sounds of sea birds, barking sea lions, and crashing waves. Depending on the season, cool morning fog often breaks into a sunny day by noon. No matter what time of year when you stay at this somewhat remote spot you’ll be sure to unwind and leave rested.
